Distance: 25 yards
Difficulty: Easy
Here is the story behind the box from the Historical Marker: Soon after the Civil War General George Armstrong Custer and his cavalry unit arrived in Texas as part of a large U.S. force sent to establish order and counter the threat posed by French-controlled Mexico. From August to October, 1865, Custer, his wife Elizabeth (Libbie), and several U.S. Cavalry units camped here on the Liendo plantation of Leonard W. Groce, heir of "Old 300" settler and cotton baron Jared Groce. The Custers enjoyed warm relations with the Groces and area Texans in part because of his insistence that federal troops treat Texans and their property with respect.
Directions: (takes you by marker, then to box): From Hwy 290, go north on FM1488 for about 2 miles, then turn right on Wyatt Chapel Rd. Soon marker will come up on the right in front on Liendo Plantation. Continue on down same road until it dead ends into FM1098. Turn left and go around curves, then turn right into cemetery and park near the back.
To the Letterbox:
Walk right along the back fence to an oak tree growing through the fence, and in front of stone for "Kemp". On far side of tree, follow fence in to its trunk. Box about 2 feet up in the tree.
