Distance to Letterbox: 50 yards
Difficulty: Easy
Part of the Other Forts of Texas Series
Here is the story from the Historical Marker (which is located just west down Hwy 71 at the Overlook park and is the site of the original fort - to busy to hide here): Used by colonists of this vicinity as a protection against Indian attacks . 1828-1842 fortified residence of Zadock Woods, veteran of the War of 1812. One of the old "Three Hundred" of Austin's colonists. Oldest man killed in the "Dawson Massacre" September 18, 1842. He is not buried here, but at Monument Hill.
Directions:
Form LaGrange, go west on Hwy 71 to West Point. Turn right on small road for Woods Prairie Cemetery, then go to end and cemetery on the left.
To the Letterbox:
Enter gate and read marker. Walk down middle past memorial marker for Wood, and on to back right corner of cemetery, near graves of "Hess". Go right to multi-trunk tree along side fence. Box is in middle cavity about 3 feet up and behind sticks, a little to the right.
