On our recent trip to Northern California, we decided to check out Hedge Creek Falls in Dunsmuir, CA.

Just off of Highway 5, there are several clear signs to that will direct you to parking area for Hedge Creek Falls. The trail takes you downhill from there and lets you enjoy a lovely waterfall from a unique perspective. The kids probably would have stayed there all day, enjoying the spray ... but the trail doesn't end there. Continuing along the other side of the creek, the trail ends at a viewing platform overlooking the Sacramento River with a beautiful view of Shasta peak. It was definitely one of the highlights of the trip.

As you turn to head back (and enjoy the falls again), look for trees of 3 then 1 then 2 on the left. As you investigate the rocks around the pair of trees, reach deep into the cave and under a flat rock to find this letterbox. Please make sure to rehide the box deep inside its cave and recover it again with the flat rock to keep it concealed from probing eyes.

Note: We are not from the area and are unsure of the trail conditions in Winter. We have read it is accessible all year round, but the waterfall would probably make it too slippery with ice and snow.

Hike length: 1 mile
