Did you know that in 1904 the Fort Shaw Indian Girls basketball team won the title “World Champions”?
Fort Shaw was named for Civil War Union officer Col. Robert G. Shaw, of Boston, Mass; who commanded the all-black 54th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. The U.S. Army post was used from 1867 to 1891. It was turned into the Fort Shaw Government Industrial Indian Boarding School in 1892 until 1910 when it was closed.
In 1904, the Fort Shaw Indian Girls Basketball Team was invited to the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis. The Fort Shaw Indian School basketball team played against local and regional championship teams and was crowned the World’s Champion Girls Basketball Team.
To find the letterbox:
Park in front of the “1904 World Champions, Fort Shaw Indian School” Arch. Stop and read the signs about the Undisputed Champions and about the School.
To your left is a 2 story concrete wall. Walk over to the front of the wall (facing the road) and look at the base. Behind some bushes you’ll see a crevasse with SPOR. There you will find the Undisputed Champions stamp.
