Lemuria

It’s easy to miss one of the greatest treasures of Jackson, Mississippi. It’s not a government building, a museum, or a natural wonder, but a bookstore! *Lemuria* (www.lemuriabooks.com) is truly a reader’s bookstore, feeling less like retail space and more like a library. Not a sterile public library, mind you, but the cozy home library of a really close, extremely literate friend.
Owner John Evans set out in 1975 to create just such a bookstore in the state which grows writers almost as well as it once grew cotton. *Lemuria* is named for a mythical lost continent whose inhabitants, according to legend, developed the first system of writing.
The Lemuria letterbox was planted inside the store with kind permission of the staff. Be sure to allow ample time to browse the stacks, which include literal stacks of books piled on the floor. My book-shopping trips to *Lemuria* average a couple of hours in length! By all means take the kiddies; there’s an inviting children’s section called “Oz,” with storytelling every Tuesday morning at 10 a.m.
Where’s the letterbox? *Lemuria* is just off I-55, in a building called Banner Hall. Locate the section where you would find Colin Fletcher’s *The Complete Walker*. Hike down to the lowest elevation in that section and you’ll quickly find what you’re looking for. There’s a table in the “Signing Gallery” perfect for stamping in.
If you can plan your trip around lunchtime or dinnertime, try the sandwiches downstairs in *The Broad Street Baking Company* (www.broadstbakery.com). The roasted pork tenderloin on focaccia is the best sandwich I’ve tasted anywhere!
