Directions to the Snowy Egret Letterbox:

Find your way to Emerson Point Park, located on Snead Island in Palmetto, FL. Snead Island extends out into Tampa Bay, and is across the Manatee River from Ft Desoto.

After entering the park go to the first parking lot on the left. This gives access to a shell midden that later was the site of the Snead homestead. Go up the ramp to look at the homestead ruins then continue down the other side to an intersection of paths amidst a planting of Royal palms.

Turn to the right up the path at 280 degrees (nearly west) . Shortly this path forks – stay to the right ( at 310 degrees) and a few paces along, just as you enter the woods, there stands on the left hand side of the path a classic example of a palm tree embraced by a strangler fig.

Continue 30 steps along the path to a Gumbo Limbo tree with reddish, peeling bark. (Floridians call this tree the "tourist tree" because it looks the same color as sunburned northerners when they visit Florida!) There is a smaller tree nestled next to the Gumbo Limbo (growing from between its roots).

Continue another 12 steps along the path to where it passes between two large Gumbo Limbo trees. The Snowy Egret Letterbox is among the roots at the back side of the Gumbo Limbo, standing guard on the right hand side of the path.

Although the spot for this box was "picked" by Mary Manatee and The Yachtsman during their visit to this park, the letterbox was actually place for us by Tweety and Mr. Coon, along with their letterboxing friends Bill and Claire from Rhode Island. Many thanks for all your help. Hopefully The Snowy Egret will prosper in its new location!

Note: To all those who have told me that this letterbox was listed in the wrong county -- thanks, just a slip of the mouse! We will be in the area to check it out in January 2006. Happy New Year!
