There are many haunted places, it seems. Haunted houses, haunted hotels, haunted castles, haunted who-knows-what-all? But I’m betting that the most haunted abode in the world is the Haunted Mansion. Why is that? A haunt is usually a ghost, right? A spirit, usually and mean-spirited spirit that remains in a place when a living person has passed on to the after-world. So, did you ever hear of a haunted shack, a haunted hovel, a haunted cabin, do you see what I’m saying? Only rich people own mansions. If you’re broke, you can forget about your spirit hanging around the shack when you move on. Oh, no, he’s got better places to go, like to the mansion on the other side of town, the better side of town, where the rich guy lives. You see where I’m going with this? And why are mansions allowed to just sit there and fall apart when the owner is no longer around? Don’t his descendants want to live in a mansion, or is it because the poor ghosts from the other side of town move in and scare away every living person? I don’t know the answer, but don’t you think it’s curious? This particular Haunted Mansion is no different. It’s been abandoned and neglected and sits under a big spooky tree deep in the woods, and the haunts have taken over.

Directions: You’ll find the Mansion at Brazos Bend State Park near Needville, Texas. Go to the park headquarters and pay your fee. Ask for a trail map, it’s separate from the park facilities map.

To the Box: Go to the Day Use Picnic Area, it’s on Elm Lake, where PI-1 is on the map. Go to the far end of the road and park near the Horseshoe Lake Loop. Take the trail and keep right around New Horseshoe Lake. Have a seat on BJ’s bench. Contemplate the lake in front of you and the woods behind. Got your compass? Take a reading of about 230 degrees and walk in that direction for 80 steps or so. You will come to a large oak tree draped with Spanish moss. There are other trees that fit this description, but only one at eighty steps, if you’re an average stepper, and the only one with a Haunted Mansion beneath its drooping branches. Look for the Mansion, you’ll surely find it, maybe under a few fallen branches. You may not see the haunts that reside in the place, but they’re hanging around for you to find should you so desire.
