These letterboxes were planted by Wisconsin Hiker for the Fall Folk Festival in October 2015. They've been left in place at CALN NARWAL as permanent plants. If you're following the clue loops from the gathering booklet, or piecing together all the different clues, this section picks up right after "An American Tale."

Our country of choice is Guatemala. Guatemala is a small country, about the size of Ohio, and is directly south of Mexico. It contains very mountainous regions as well as thick rainforests that conceal ancient Mayan ruins. TJ_Mich's two oldest sons, The Nickerboxer and Little Woodchuck, were both born in Guatemala so the family chose to carve three symbols of this country.

Begin at the northern edge of the LAYORS KOA section of the park, where the eastern leg of a four-way path leads from an open field into the woods, paralleling a power line. Walk until you reach a "T" and then head left.

Guatemala Volcano
Created by: The Nickerboxer, depicting one of the active volcanoes that lines Guatemala's horizons.

Continue past a power pole on the left and then stay left at a “Y”. When the trail curves right, veer off onto a deer path on the left. Follow this into the woods for 45-50 steps towards a pile of logs at the edge of the power line clearing. The volcano is ready to erupt from under the logs.

Guatemala Spirit Bird
Created by: Samtrack, representing the quetzal bird, the "nahual" or spirit guide of a Guatemalan folk hero, who is also pictured on the national flag, and lends its name to Guatemala's currency.

Return to the main trail and pass by several houses on the left. When you reach a restroom building on your journey you can take a break if needed. Then choose the dirt/wood chip trail, not the paved path. Watch for two large trees on the left, almost forming a “V”, just before another intersection. Go to these trees and then head further in on a bearing of 280° to a “Y” tree with a third broken limb. The box is inside the fallen tree near the “Y” tree.

Guatemala Coffee Mug
Created by: TJ_Mich, highlighting the coffee grown in Guatemala and exported worldwide.

Go back to the main trail and take a left at the “Y” intersection. Then take a right at the 4-way and a left at a “T”. Continue a short distance past a ~15’ tall snag on the left and then you will see cut logs on both sides of the trail. The box is between the 2nd & 3rd logs on the right side of the trail.
