Scruffy Dog in the Forest is my first letterbox plant as part of Dog Scout Troop 188's requirements for one of my dogs to earn his Letterboxing badge.
Avalonia Land Conservancy is a land trust dedicated to conservation via acquisition of natural areas. They believe it is essential to conserve natural resources for the benefit of wildlife, the present generation and the generations yet to come. Avalonia now holds more than 3200 acres of land, preserved in perpetuity as natural open space. Where it is appropriate, trails are maintained for 'passive' enjoyment, such as hiking, bird-watching, nature study and photography.
Barrett Preserve is part of the Avalonia Land Conservancy and can be entered at 904 Long Cove Rd., Ledyard, CT, opposite Mount Vernon Drive. Park on Mount Vernon Drive and walk across the street to the gravel-lined entrance to the preserve. Walk straight and turn right at the first bird house on your right. Walk to the 2nd birdhouse straight ahead of you and when you reach that, take a left turn. You will come up to the Barrett Preserve trail info sign and sign that says leashed dogs are allowed. Enter the yellow marked trail - it will curve to the right and then makes a curve to the left. The trail will go downhill and then levels off. Look for the upside-down tripod and what you seek will be nestled in its heart.

Hike length: 0.5 miles
