(must be done during regular business hours)

1. Start at Rochester Hills Public Library at 500 Olde Towne Road

2. You’re hungry. Start at the vending machines in the West entrance.

3. While snacking, watch the fish swim back and forth and in circles. The fish tank is 700 gallons and was provided by the Friends of the Rochester Hills Public Library in 1992 for the current building.

4. Get your land legs back. Proceed through the lobby and climb the stairs to the 2nd Floor. From the Grand Staircase, admire the perennial garden. Charles and William Chapman, owners of the Western Knitting Mills on Water Street, created Chapman Pond by damming up Paint Creek. The site upon which the library now stands was actually an island where Boy Scouts camped, giving it the name Scout Island.

5. At the top of the stairs, do a hard, hairpin turn to your left. Walk straight to the Conference Room. Don’t go inside, it’s just a room.

6. Make a right turn and walk to the Emergency Exit.

7. Turn around and find a book title on the poster.

8. Look this book up in the catalog. Find where the book is located in the library and go there.

9. As you ponder the Lytles, you also want to see the extent of the family farm. Look where you would find a land atlas and plat book. Please be discreet and re-hide well.
