Wolf Rock Nature Preserve, Crane Hill Rd., Mansfield CT, N41.761 W72.216567

Very hilly, sometimes steep, rocky walk, near cliffs. Approx. 1.25 miles round trip.

The Erymanthian Boar was a vicious creature that lived on Mount Erymanthos, Greece, a mountain that was once sacred to Artemis Mistress of the animals. This noble but vicious creature was a favorite of the gods and would be sent to destroy villages for not paying homage to certain gods. When the goddess turned her wrath on the countryside, she would send a raging boar with it's monstrous tusks, to come down from it's lair in the high forest region and attack villagers. It would also destroy livestock and crops.

From Route 195 in Mansfield Center near the intersection of route 195 and route 89, go west on Browns Road. It runs up alongside the big white church. Go .8 of a mile on Browns road to a Y in the road. This is the intersection of Browns Road and Crane Hill Road. Bear left here on Crane Hill Rd and travel .3 of a mile to a pull off area where you can park alongside the road. Cross the street and follow the light blue blazed Nipmuck trail. The trail starts by going of a stone wall near a Joshua's Tract sign. Follow this trail .3 of a mile to Wolf Rock, a huge round glacial boulder perched on the edge of a 40-foot cliff. From that rock take a reading of 100 degrees. Go there and take the Yellow trail. After walking a total of .5 of a mile you will see a tree with 2 big red spots painted on it. Ignore it and keep following the yellow trail. At about .57 from the start of your hike, you come to an intersection with an unmarked trail. Immediately on your right is a tree with a yellow arrow pointing the direction you just came. The tree also has 2 shot up nature preserve signs. From that tree go southeast at 120 degrees, 50 steps down the trail to a tree on the left of the trail with a yellow blaze on it. From that tree go 190 degrees 38 steps to a rock. Under an overhang on the southeast side of the rock, hidden under some sticks is the Erymanthian Boar letterbox. After stamping in you return the way you came.

Hike length: 1-2 miles
