On May 23, 2015, the Saturday of Memorial weekend, six inches of rain fell directly over the headwaters of the Blanco River in just four hours. Another 6-7 inches fell that night miles away from Wimberley on ground already saturated from previous rain. Early on May 24, the Blanco River gained momentum and height, rising 20 feet in one hour and 35 feet in 3 hours. It eventually topped out over 40 feet, destroying the river gauge as it rose 7 feet higher than the highest level ever recorded way back in 1929. Five-hundred-year-old trees were uprooted, bridges destroyed and many homes flooded, one being swept away with people still inside calling 911. Eleven people lost their lives during the flood and the town of Wimberley was stunned. But soon the town pulled itself together and volunteers began helping survivors with food, clothes and shelter. As the rebuilding process started, the motto "Wimberley Strong" was coined to embody the indomitable spirit of its residents. Purple flags began flying with the message “Wimberley Strong: Strength, Hope, Courage”, and Robyn Ludwick, a local singer, wrote a song for the children of Wimberley with the motto as its title. So on this first anniversary of the flood I have put a little of this spirit in a letterbox for you to experience at the Cypress Creek Church, the main base of operations for all the volunteers. There used to be a Nature Trail next to the church and this replacement box is on the remnants of it.

Directions:
Go south on RR 12 across the Blanco River bridge and turn right on Stillwater Rd across from Paradise Valley subdivision. Turn left on Flat Rock St. then right on next road with sign for Cypress Creek Church. Turn left into parking lot and park at far end near the playground.

Clues:
Step over the chain across the gravel trail and walk on it past the playground, going past original beginning of Nature Trail on left, to where it forms a circle. Go left (clockwise) 55 steps then left 10 steps to a bench next to the old trail and follow it into woods 35 steps to just past sign for Meditation Garden on left. Go left 18 steps to benches in the old garden, then 12 more steps to two multi-trunk cedar trees next to each other on your left. LB is at back base of bigger and closer one under rocks and needles.

Hike length: 0.1 miles
