This letterbox calls attention to a mural, which calls attention to Foundation Cristosal, a human rights-based community development organization that works in El Salvador to empower the poor to act for justice and equality. El Salvador is one of the most violent countries in the world, with a current average of over 20 gang-related murders occurring EVERY DAY. And many of us up here in our safe, cozy homes have very little knowledge of this horrific situation.

The mural was a labor of love by the wonderfully diverse community of Tarrytown, NY and parish of Christ Church and San Marcos. Christ Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its 19th century Gothic Revival architecture and its connection to Washington Irving, best known for his short stories ‘Rip Van Winkle’ and ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.’ Irving, who served for years on the church vestry, is considered America’s first internationally best-selling author. He is also responsible for all the ivy adorning the church, grown from his cuttings from the Scottish home of Sir Walter Scott.

TO FIND THE BOX:
Find and explore the Christ Church of Tarrytown, NY, then walk downhill on Elizabeth Street. You will see the red door of the rectory on your left. In just a few more steps is a lovely courtyard between the rectory back porch/garage and the parish hall. Stand in this space and study the colorful mural which pays stylistic homage to the Fernando Llort-inspired folk art tradition of El Salvador. The mural depicts various places and cultural icons of both Tarrytown and El Salvador. The painting was done in the spring of 2016. People were encouraged to assist the lead artist by signing up for a timed paint-by-number session, selecting from 32 hand-mixed acrylic colors.

You will find the box tucked under the bottom edge of the mural to the left of where the water flows down. Please close up the contents and box lid tightly and put it back the way you found it, using dry leaves and the loose rocks to hide it from view. Also, please peruse the Cristosal.org website to learn more about this very important cause. Your support can really make a difference to these at-risk children and their families. Break down the walls and help build a bridge of hope/esperanza!
