David is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture created between 1501 and 1504 by Michelangelo. The marble statue represents the Biblical hero David, a favored subject in the art of Florence. Originally commissioned as one of a series of statues of prophets to be positioned along the roofline of the east end of Florence Cathedral, the statue was placed instead in a public square outside the Palazzo della Signoria, the seat of civic government in Florence, on 8 September 1504. The statue was moved to the Galleria dell'Accademia in 1873, and later replaced at the original location by a replica. After seeing the statue, you can see my replica box at Porte Sante Cemetery next to San Miniato al Monte.
Directions:
Park near Ponte Vecchio.
Clues:
Walk south across bridge and go left (east) on Via del Bardi. Continue as it becomes Via di San Niccolo, then bear right on Via del Monte Alle and go left up steps to Viale Galileo. Go right about 100 meters then left up steps to San Miniato basilica with great views. Go left through arch then immediately go right through another arch into the cemetery. Go on main path as it bends right to 4-way jct with benches on right. Go left 14 steps to multi-trunk cypress tree on right. Minibox is within trunks 1.5 meters high under a rock and needles. Please be discreet and be aware that the cemetery is only open until 1pm on Sundays and 6pm other days. When done you can go back down Viale Galileo to Piazzale Michelangelo and see yet another replica of David.
Hike length: 2-3 miles
