You have been invited to tour Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! Please take the tour of the campus, and get sorted into your house! (This is an easy walk with no elevation gain or loss to speak of. It is an easy collection for all eleven-year-olds who are ready to begin their wizarding education!

1. The Wampus: Take a drive to beautiful Mount Greylock. Stop at the visitor center at the bottom of the hill and say hi to the really nice park rangers! Head up the hill to the Summit parking lot (parking is $5 for Mass residents, $6 for non-residents) After parking, head over to Bascom Lodge. I recommend the burgers or the Gruyere grilled cheese with caramelized onions and apple slices. After your meal, follow the trail directly away from the Bascom Lodge sign. Follow the trail off to the right and look for the stone with the poem by Henry David Thoreau. Reach around the right side of the stone next to the evergreen tree. Under a pile of sticks you will find the lair of the mighty Wampus!
2. Ilvermorny Castle: Before searching out the rest of the beasts that represent the four houses of Ilvermorny, find the castle. From the Wampus’s lair, continue along the paved path toward the summit. At the fork in the road, follow the right side path. Enjoy the beautiful vistas as you walk along the curved rock wall. At the end of the wall, make a U-turn to the right and walk along the wall’s front side until you reach the center of the section of wall topped by polished granite. Natural stone breaks through the dirt here. Follow it South a few steps until you find a six-pointed star. Continue walking South until you reach the evergreen growing flat on the ground – about 5 steps. Gently lift the evergreen branches to find the entrance to Ilvermorny Castle!
3. Pukwudgie: Continue your search for the remaining 3 beasts. It isn’t surprising that William the Pukwudgie and his family stay close to the castle. From Ilvermorny castle, move East 10 steps, then turn South and move along more natural stone rising from the dirt. Walk about 10 steps South and look on the ground for the arrow of a Pukwudgie. Then turn West and move about 5 steps from the arrow. Look underneath the flat evergreen to find the Pukwudgie’s home. Be careful – they can be prickly with humans!
4. The Horned Serpent: The Horned Serpent also stays within close proximity of the castle, although due to the Pukwudgie’s mistrust, he has made his home at a bit of a distance from their poison arrows. Follow the Pukwudgie’s trail north across the meadow next to the huge tower. Pass the sign for Marks of the Ice Age as the trail splits into a “V”. Continue to the left on the paved path. Right ahead is a lone evergreen tree. Look for the Horned Serpent on the Northwest side of the tree.
5. Thunderbird: The mighty Thunderbird lives a bit apart from the rest of Ilvermorny’s creatures, where it soars above Mount Greylock, creating storms in its wake. From the Horned Serpent’s den, go back to the fork in the road and head North on the dirt path. At the next fork, follow the signs for Thunderbolt Shelter, which bears most of the brunt of the Thunderbird’s storms. Take the trail past the parking lot, then head down the hill to the Thunderbolt Shelter itself. After you check out the shelter, sit down at the picnic table outside of the shelter and read the ski sign. Turn your back on the sign and find the evergreen tree at the U-shaped curve in the path. Under the tree, you will find the home of the mighty Thunderbird.
You have now explored the castle’s grounds and the 4 beasts. It is now time for you to be sorted into your house, and begin your magical education at Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!!
