The Crosstown Road Series: #1 - Howard Cemetery

*we suggest packing a lunch, snacks, and beverages for this tour through a historic cemetery on a beautiful mountain road - wear comfortable shoes!

- Start at the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department, located on Route 12 in West Berlin/Riverton

- Drive over the green bridge and turn left onto Crosstown Road

- Continue on Crosstown Road for 1.8 miles and you will see Howard Cemetery on your left

- Start by standing near the tree at the front, right corner of this VAST cemetery

- Take time to admire the MANY varied headstones

- Meander towards the back left corner of the cemetery

- Take a rest at Ellen's final resting place (don't forget to stay hydrated!)

- While standing in front of Ellen's headstone, turn 90 degrees to your right and begin the LONG walk towards the center of the cemetery where Caroline lays resting (this might be a good place to stop and enjoy your lunch!)

- Walk past Caroline's MAMMOTH headstone and turn 90 degrees to the left

- Continue your hike towards the back of the cemetery (aren't you glad you wore comfortable shoes?!)

- When you pass the final monument, you are almost there!

- The Howard Cemetery box is buried under a SPOR up against the rear stone wall to your right

*Please rehide well: this LARGE cemetery draws a LARGE crowd

STATUS UNKNOWN The Crosstown Road Series: #2 - First Congregational Church Memorial

- Return to your car and continue on Crosstown Road in the direction you were originally driving

- The road will make a sharp left turn after 1.1 miles

- After the turn, pull off on the left-hand shoulder before the Yield sign

- Follow the stone-lined path to the memorial for Berlin's First Congregational Church

- Once at the memorial, count the number of letters in the Pastor's first name and the number of letters in his last name

- Starting at the right corner of the memorial, with Crosstown Road to your right, walk the number of steps in his first name

- Turn to face Crosstown Road and walk the number of steps in his last name

- To your left you will see two trees close to each other

- The First Congregational Church Memorial box is hidden under sticks and leaves between the two trees
