The San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway, known to most folks as SAAP, was was created in 1884 to connect San Antonio with a closer deep water port than Galveston. The name was derived from its first line that was built from San Antonio with the intention of reaching Aransas Pass. However, construction of the main line turned south at Gregory to enter Corpus Christi. Branches were later built from San Antonio to Kerrville, from Skidmore to Falfurrias, and from near Shiner to Lockhart. You can follow over 500 feet of the abandoned Kerrville Branch rail bed in James Kiehl River Bend Park, a natural area along the Guadalupe River that is home to this box.

Directions:
From I10 go east on FM 473 about 3 miles, then right on River Bend Rd about 1.5 miles to James Kiehl River Bend Park on the right. You will pass an old bridge of the Railroad on the left.

Clues:
Walk south on Prairie Trail past picnic tables and the Pecan Loop Trail to where it bends right with view of Guadalupe River on left. Go right on the old Railroad bed past the wood building on your left to a bench and sign about the Railroad on your right. Walk behind bench 12 steps to a 3-trunk tree with wire fence behind it. LB is behind left two trunks next to wire fence under sticks and leaves.

Hike length: 0.5 miles
