The Medina River Natural Area is over 500 acres of riparian landscape rich with pecan and bald cypress trees near the river, and cactus and honey mesquite dotting the upland trails. Many birds can be seen, including the Green Kingfisher. The El Chaparral Trail, named for the vegetation of tangled shrubs and thorny bushes, is a hike/bike paved Greenway through the park that hosts this series. The last box contains the only logbook (with a "racy" version of a chaparral), and since the trail can be busy please be discreet.

Directions:
From I410 go south on TX 16 (Palo Alto Rd) for 4.4 miles then left into Medina River Natural Area.

Box 1: Prickly Pear
Walk on paved El Chaparral Trail past 0.25 mile marker to jct with Rio Medina Trail with prickly pear cactus behind sign. Go right 8 steps then left on faint path 10 steps, going between tree and wood post, to another wood post on left. Prickly Pear box is behind post under sticks.

Box 2: Honey Mesquite
Continue on paved El Chaparral Trail past jct for Nogales Trail and jct for Olmos Trail to 1 mile marker. Continue 38 steps and go right 18 steps off trail to multi-trunk tree. Honey Mesquite box is at back base under sticks.

Box 3: Green Kingfisher
Continue on trail as it descends to 2 mile marker. Continue 16 steps then go left uphill 10 steps to boulder with small multi-trunk tree above it. Green Kingfisher box is on top of boulder next to tree under rocks.

Box 4: Chaparral
Continue on trail as it ascends and goes past Jacal ruins then 2.25 mile marker to trail sign on right just before descending again. Walk behind sign 10 steps to multi-trunk tree behind three other ones. Chaparral box with logbook is at back base under rocks.
