Hike Distance: Approximately 0.8 miles roundtrip
Terrain: Gravel/rocky trail, fairly level.

This series was a joint effort of Martini Man & Wisconsin Hiker.

After passing through the park gate, drive by the road for the caves and continue on to the next left turn for the Bosquecito and La Sevilla picnic areas. Continue on this narrow road towards La Sevilla. Pass the RV camping area and watch for a picnic/camping site on the left and a rock outcropping above on the right, just before the AZ Trail crosses the road. Park here. (If the road turns left and enters a wash with a painted rock, you have gone too far!)

After parking, walk 50 steps further down the road into a small wash. Turn right and find the AZ Trail behind a large boulder. Head west along the trail. Pass a stone building down the hill on the right, then a large fallen tree on the right and a brave “10” on the left. Continue to the “Orange is the New Black” rock on the left. Stop and take a bearing of 100° and take 15 steps to a pointy rock. It is said that the belief in the bad luck of a broken mirror arose from ancient concerns over seeing one’s reflection in a pool and how that reflection trapped one’s soul. Since mirrors also reflect back one’s visage, the breaking of a mirror was a way of losing a connection to one’s soul and allowing it to stray away from your body. The Romans added the seven year length through their belief that it took seven years for life to renew itself. So, if you feel brave and confident about your luck with broken mirrors, you can find 7 Years Bad Luck under the overhang on the backside.

Continue further along the trail to “We Can Do It”. Stop here and sight 150° to spot a flat orange rock between a saguaro and two stools(?). Make your way to the rock to find Wrong Side of Bed hidden beneath smaller rocks on the backside of the orange rock. In Roman times, it was considered bad luck to get out of bed on the left side. Hence if you exited on that wrong side, your day was fated to be a bad one. Which side did you get out of bed this morning?
Retrace your steps to return to your car.

We’d appreciate an email to let us know how these bad omens are doing. Thank you!
