Distance to Letterbox: 30 yards
Difficulty: Easy
Below is the history of the Fischer Homestead from the historical marker sign. Unfortunately the home is on private property (direction below if you want to view from road), so box hidden farther down road along creek.
History: This seven-acre homestead sits at the mouth of the springs of Rebecca Creek, a significant source of water for area settlers and farmers. It was part of the original land grant to early Texas pioneer James Baker for his service in the Texas War for Independence. John Heinrich Fischer purchased the land in 1860, although it is likely he leased it as early as 1857 for the purpose of running his cattle. He and his wife, Auguste (Koch), both natives of Germany, reared their children here. Daughter Anna and her husband, William Klinger, bought the homestead in 1881 and lived in the cabin her father built until 1886. (2001)
Directions:
From Hwy 281, go east on Rebecca Creek Rd. Turn left on Cypress Cove rd and go to just before crosses Rebecca creek. You will see Saddlehorn rd on right with gate and stone wall. Turn right here, then swing left on gravel roadway and park to right edge.
To the Letterbox:
Walk to the stone wall's left end. Follow metal rail to end near huge tree. Box at base of that tree under a rock.
To the Homestead: Continue on Cypress Cove road over the creek. Cypress Cove will go right, but stay straight on Knoll Schwope Road and soon look left for house in open erea (has black gate at entry).
Hike length: 0.1 miles
