NORTH & EAST RAYMOND LOOP OF LAKES REGION LETTERBOX TRAIL-

This trail was originally part of a larger trail which focussed on the center part of the town. Due to its geographical distance from the other boxes, we thought it might be best to list it separately, in case you'd like to do this part another day. The focus of this trail is Ssignificant Citizens of Raymond."
To begin this trail, follow Rt 302 in Raymond until it intersects Rt. 85 (Webbs Mills Rd.) Take Rt. 85 for 3-4 miles. The first box will be located on the left, in "CLOUGH'S GENERAL STORE"( opposite Raymond Hill Rd.) If you'd like to walk, you can park your car here or in the Town Hall lot (just up the hill on your right). If not, park here and drive to your next site. Ask the friendly people behind the counter for a stamp.....

CLOUGH'S GENERAL STORE HAS BEEN IN RAYMOND FOR OVER 150 YRS.,
IT SOLD PRODUCE & MERCHANDISE SIMILAR TO ROEBUCK & SEARS
ORIGINALLY OWNED BY HJ & OB LANE, DANCES USED TO BE HELD UPSTAIRS FOR ENTERTAINMENT;
LATER OWNED BY COLE BROS. & NOW THE CLOUGHS,
PURCHASES THERE WILL BE MONEY WELL-SPENT

From Clough's proceed up the hill on Rt. 85 until you see Jordan-small Middle School to your right. Look for the stamp near the sign. For this site we'd like to recognize Mrs. Frances Small.....

FRANCES SMALL TAUGHT MUSIC IN RAYMOND FOR OVER 50 YRS.;
SHE PLAYED VVIOLEN FOR THE PSO, JUST ONE HIGHLIGHT IN HER MANY AND VARIED CAREERS.
HER FAMILY CONTRIBUTED LAND FOR JORDAN-SMALL AND THEN RAYMOND ELEMNETARY SCHOOL,
SHE DEVOTED HER LIFE TO TEACHING STUDENTS & WORLD LEADERS TO FOLLOW "THE GOLDEN RULE."

Return to your car and turn onto Raymond Hill Rd. Proceed until you intersect Valley Rd. (on your right). Follow that until you come to Ledgehill Rd. Take Ledgehill Rd. When it intersects the N.Raymond Rd. At that intersection you should see a sign which reads,"Ganderbrook Farm." You can pull into the site and park your car near the front entrance. This site recognizes the Wilson Bros.Look for the stamp in a corner of the fence post.....

ON THE SITE OF THE CURRENT GANDERBROOK FARM,
LIVED THE WILSON BROTHERS, WHO CAME TO GREAT HARM.
IN THE 1890'S THEY BUILT THE WILSON SPRING HOTEL,
& BOTTLED CRYSTAL, CLEAR, SPRING WATER TO SELL.
ONLY 3 YRS. LATER, THE HOTEL BURNED TO THE GROUND,
THE WILSON BROS. HAD FAITH THEY COULD REBOUND.
THEY TRAVELED TO BOSTON SEEKING FUNDS TO REBUILD,
& THERE UNDER MYSTERIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES, ONE OF THE WILSON BROS. WAS KILLED!

Return to the intersection ofLedgehill Rd. and the N.Raymond Rd. Turn right on to N. Raymond Rd. Follow it 2-3 miles. On your right you will see a large, white farmstead with a barn. This belongs to the Edwards' family and was one of the original 100-acre grants of land. The farm has been in the family for over 100 yrs. For this site, we'd like to recognize Carleton Edwards. Park along the road at the bottom of the driveway. Look for the stamp at the foot of the driveway, near a large stump.....

CARLETON EDWARDS CHOSE NEVER TO MARRY,
THIS FARMER SOLD HIS MILK TO OAKHURST DAIRY.
HELD HIGH IN ESTEEM BY THE GRANGE AND HIS PEERS,
HE SERVED AS A TOWN SELECTMAN FOR OVER 50 YRS.

Hope you enjoyed this part of our "Lakes Region Letterbox Trail." Share your adventure with others and spread the word. Happy Letterboxing!
