This letterbox was replaced 8/19/04 near the Old Iron Town, which is about 20 mi. west of Cedar City.

***I got a report that the ruin is now behind a fence with a private property sign. I will try to retrieve it and replace it when I'm in the area.***

Drive-by, once you're at the location.

During the 1850's, Mormon members were sent by Brigham Young to the Iron Mission in what is now Cedar City, UT. About 10 years after the iron works of Cedar City closed, the site of Iron City was discovered. In 1868, the Union Iron Company was organized. By 1870 the population of Iron City was 97. Although the city seemed prosperous, the Union Iron Co. was unable to overcome the obstacles created by the money panic of 1874, and the lack of efficient transportation to the outlets in Northern Utah. The iron operation closed in 1877.
From I-15 take the Cedar City exit #59. This is 200 S. going westbound, it turns into Hwy. 56. Follow Hwy. 56 westbound for 20 miles, then turn left (south) onto a good dirt/gravel road for about 5 miles, following the signs for Old Iron Town State Park, it dead-ends at the parking area.

Just before the parking area, watch on the right side for a yellow caution sign warning of a sharp curve of the road, and 10 MPH. The box is near this area, so pull off to the side of the road, or go ahead and park in the parking area, and walk back.

On the left side of the road, just after a house with a wooden rail fence, there is an old fence post with a rock "ruin" behind it. In the higher part of the ruin wall, facing the road, you will find the box.

Please be discreet, and careful with the ruin's remaining rocks, when rehiding.
