This box is located in South Mountain State Park, 18 miles south of Morganton, North Carolina, 2.1 miles up the very pretty (and somewhat strenuous) Chestnut Knob Trail. The first 1/2 mile is a series of steep switchbacks. After that, the going gets easier. Begin in the Jacob Fork Parking Area. Pick up a trail map from the Visitors Center. Take the Chestnut Knob Trail almost as far as it will go up toward the Chestnut Knob Overlook (stop along the way for a great view from the Jacob Fork River Gorge Overlook). At the top of Chestnut Knob, right before you begin the short descent down to the rocky Knob itself, you will pass between two signs, one a hiker icon and arrow on the right, and the other a Warning sign about climbing hazards on your left. Stop between, and facing, these two signs. Turn left, approximately 45 degrees. Walk 28 paces off the trail to a moss covered hump of an old stump with three or four trunks growing out of it. Look on the NE side of this stump for a split rock. The letterbox is in the split, beneath some sticks. Be discreet. Even in February, this seems to be a popular trail. After you find the letterbox, walk out to Chestnut Knob. The view is great! Please keep us posted on the status of the box and stamp at opossumfairy@yahoo.com.
