Bourne Farm’s Cow Tunnel

Bourne Farm is located on Rte 28 A in the historic district of West Falmouth. Many people enjoy its simplistic charm. One cannot help but look upon the farm from the road and be taken back in time. The time dates back to the pre-revolutionary date of 1775 built by the Crowell family. However, Bourne farm is named after the owners from 1925, Lester Bourne, Sr. and Eulinda Bowman Bourne.
Today we use this farm for many reasons. For solitude, take one of the many connecting trails, or just have a quiet moment enjoying the sparkling waters of Crocker Pond. For many, celebrations are had, weddings, parties and pumpkin day.
Let’s take a walk through the trails which at one time were pasture lands. Here we can imagine many cows grazing quietly on the meadow and being herded back through the ancient cow tunnel back home to the corral at night.

Directions:
Park at the Bourne Farm parking lot located on Rte 28 A, aka West Falmouth Highway, across from Thomas Landers Road.
Walk towards the left and you will go through a wooden slated fence onto a dirt road. Enjoy Crocker Pond, grape vines and apple trees that line your path on the left. Pass two stone benches and walk through a passage in the old rock wall. At the fork in the road take the right path passing a stone bench and you will see a wooden map kiosk. Step up to the kiosk, look for a wooden bench, behind it see the “cattle tunnel” sign. You will also see funny faces on the trees made from shells and other materials.
Continue on that path passing beautiful scrub pine on your right and in a few steps a large pink granite boulder on your right. Take a left at the fork. Duck your head and go through the cow tunnel, don’t forget to moo. After leaving the tunnel, you will come to a stone bench, there you will see many paths. Oh my, which to choose? To find the box please take the middle trail, the one that starts between the wild rhododendron on the left and “uh, oh” POISON IVY post, on the right. “The middle trail” is posted on a wooden sign in a tree.
Hike up the hill, nearing the top of the hill is another choice to make, left, right or straight. Go left onto “cross road #1”. Going downhill now you will come to a grove of pine trees. Take a left at the fork towards “Bourne Farm”. You will come upon a post declaring “blueberry bushes” stop, take 30 steps, look right and you will see a large black oak with a mossy trunk bottom and further up splitting into two trunks. You will find the letterbox at the base of this tree. Be careful of poison ivy and black raspberry vines with thorns. Please carefully conceal it with sticks and leaves as you found it. HAPPY HUNTING.
Afterwards enjoy the many other paths, or to head back, continue straight and head back through the cow tunnel. MOO
