Difficulty: flat terrain; can be very icy in winter; about 10 minutes each way.

Background: The North South Trail (NST) runs 77 miles from the Rhode Island's southern shore at the Atlantic Ocean in Charlestown to its northern border at the Massachusetts line in Burrillville. The North South Trail was proposed over three decades ago by George Ernst, a hiker from Cranston. He suggested building new trails and
connecting them together with already existing hiking trials to create a long path across the state. The state of RI studied the idea in 1978 but the trail wasn't actually built until 1991. The North South Trail letterbox series is a series of letterboxes placed along various points on the trail to celebrate this achievement. Each stamp contains a common image that represents the NST as well as an image unique to the stamp's location.

The North South Trail – The Trestle , the fourth letterbox in this series, is placed at the midpoint of the trail at mile 40 in a very rural section of Coventry on the CT border.

Acknowledgement:

I have been looking for a good image of a trestle for the letterbox for a long time. I finally found one I liked but it was beyond my carving ability. A big thanks to Music Woman who carved the stamp in this letterbox for me.

Driving Directions: From the flashing light at the junction of Rt.’s 117 and 102 in Coventry, go west on Rt 117, Flat River Rd. At the stop sign turn right and continue on Rt 117. In approx. 1 mile, turn let onto Lewis Farm Rd. Drive 1/2 mile to where the Trestle Trail crosses the road between telephone poles no.’s 15 and 16. Park on the right. The Trestle Trail follows an old railroad right-of-way which was constructed in 1854 by the Hartford, Providence, and Fishkill Railroad. The tracks were pulled up after the line was abandoned in the late 1960’s.

Clues: Follow the trail over the old RR trestle that goes over the Moosup River. There are nice views of the Moosup River from this high bridge. In a few minutes follow the NS trail right turn off the Trestle Trail. Look for a N/S Trail sign on at tree on the right side of the trail. From this tree, continue on trail for 8 steps. Take 23 steps at 60 degrees; 4 steps at 160. Box is under dead log. Please re-hide very carefully as this trail is well used.
