Historic Home Hunt

NOTE: The stamp in this letterbox is hand-carved and large. You will need a 5 x 7 piece of paper. There may be extra pieces of paper in the box if you forget.

You will begin your hunt in the center of McFarland, a village on the eastern shore of Lake Waubesa. Start at the gazebo in Arnold Larson Park on the corner of Exchange St. and Farwell St.

Standing in the center of the gazebo, face the back of the Arnold Larson Park sign.

Beyond the sign, you will see a Queen Anne style Victorian home built in 1898.

Make your way to the front walkway of this house. Take in the view of the front of the house. You’ll be seeing it again. You are now at the Larson House Museum. This home was owned by the John Larson family for nearly 80 years, but was then allowed to fall into disrepair. It was purchased by the McFarland Historical Society in 2012 and, with the generous help of the McFarland community, restored to a house museum, representing life in 1920’s McFarland. It is open for free tours on Memorial Day and every Sunday from 1-4 p.m. through September.

Follow the sidewalk to the left.

Pass the herb garden on your left and the side porch on your right.

Find the 5-trunked tree by the pergola.

Sit on the bench facing the back of the house. Directly ahead you will see where the Larson family would have gone if a tornado was approaching.

Walk to that cellar entrance. Look to the right under the porch ramp and you will find the letterbox. Please close it tightly when you are done and replace it under the porch ramp.
