Fred Harman, one of the country's foremost painters of the American West, was an American artist best known for his popular Red Ryder comic strip, which he drew for 25 years, reaching 40 million readers through 750 newspapers. It also spawned Red Ryder comic books, a radio show, TV series, over 30 movies and the Daisy Red Ryder BB Gun. Fred grew up in Pagosa Springs and eventually retired there, so when he died in 1982 he was buried in Hilltop Cemetery, where this box can be found.

From US 160 go north on Lewis St, then take immediate left on 5th St for 0.3 mile. Bear left on 411 (Cemetery Rd) for 0.4 mile then turn left into Hilltop Cemetery through arch. Take second right, turn left on Red Rose Dr, turn right at third road (Lily) and go to where it bends left. Continue straight on smaller road about 50 yards and park by grave of Fred Harman on right.

Walk north to grave, then continue past back of it 5 steps to medium pine tree with bushes on left side. LB is at left base under rocks.
