This box is a tribute to the working farms along this stretch of Route 117 in Concord and Sudbury. The clues are a little mundane because the trail is not well-marked, although there aren't many options. I wouldn't want you to get lost in the swamp. There used to be lots of cute little Salamander signs but most of them have vanished.
Park in the small Davis Farm Conservation Land lot in north Sudbury, on Route 117 between Windmill Drive and Davis Field. (The entrance to the lot is just a few feet east of Windmill Drive and easy to miss).
Walk in on the grassy dirt road. Note that a trail goes off to the right but ignore it for now. After a little less than half a mile, you’ll come to a field completely enclosed by woods. Look to the right and you’ll see a steep slope coming down; kids sled here in the winter.
Just before you reach the field, take the trail that goes off to the left. Stay left at the fork. Follow the trail through woods carpeted with ferns, and note the huge oak trees.
The trail more or less goes around the edge of the field you saw. When you near the next corner of the field, you’ll see a trail come in from the right. Stay left and go over a little bridge. 23 steps further, on the right, there's a tree with interesting roots. Corn Moon is behind it, under the roots, covered with leaves and sticks.
Go over another bridge and past a boardwalk on the left. Just after the boardwalk stay left at the little fork or you'll end up walking in a ditch. (I do this every. Single. Time.)
The trail goes up the third side of the field past some more enormous oaks. You’ll see a stone wall in front of you. Look to the right and see a very large oak tree about 20 steps away, growing right at the wall. Harvest Moon is in a crevice under the big rock at the base of this tree, on the side away from the wall. Please avoid making a trail to it from the ferns!
To get back to the road, keep straight on the trail at the salamander sign. Take your next right and go up a steep, short hill. You’ll go across another stone wall and find yourself at the top of the sledding hill. Go straight across and take the path through the pine forest. It goes down hill eventually and re-joins the road you came in on; turn left to go back to the parking.
