Originally my two boys and I had carved all 3 of our Hunger Games Stamps and hid them throughout the city of Boerne. But as we were new to this whole Letterboxing adventure, we placed 2 of them in rather terrible locations and they were both stolen in a week, before we could even post them! We've learned our lesson and have re-carved them with much better hiding places!
For the "Catching Fire" stamp you will need to make your way out to Northrup Park in Boerne. Northrup Park is not really a park, but more of a Baseball complex here in Boerne complete with 5 or 6 well kept baseball diamonds. There are however some little secret trails in and around the park that most people who visit are completely unaware of! That is where you will find this one...
Off of Johns Road you will turn onto the I 10 Frontage road and continue driving on it past the entrance to the Highway. The frontage road will dead-end at Northrup Park. Turn Right and drive through the gates of the park.

At the first stop sign you come to, turn right and follow the road as it curves around. *Note: you are driving away from the baseball fields at this point! Now park directly in front of the Large Pavilion/Basketball Courts on your right. You will make the rest of this journey on foot.

Make your way to the last stone picnic bench at the far left corner of the pavilion. When you get there, you will notice a small but well worn path leading off into the woods directly behind the bench. Follow that trail and continue on through some brush and low hanging branches and you will reach a rather abrupt drop-off that will lead down to a creek bed. 90% of the time this is a dry creek bed that is home to dozens of deer and wildlife. However, please be aware that during rainy periods, this area has a tendency to be a slow moving but wide and shallow active creek! Dress accordingly :)

As you walk down and arrive at the creek bed look left and you will notice that the creek continues off in that direction. Now go that way (left) following the creek bed for roughly 140 steps.

You will now be approaching the first real "bend in the river" as the creek bed curves off towards the right. When dry, you will notice this area for the large cluster of trees on your right hand side, and the abundance of boulders and rocks laying in the creek bed. When you reach the cluster of large trees, you are near the LetterBox!

You will see one tree, larger than all the rest by a good amount, directly in front of all the trees. It has one large trunk and a broken, smaller one fallen off behind it. It is behind this tree you will discover a VERY obvious rock Cairn nestled in at the bases of these two trunks that form the large tree. "Catching Fire" will be found inside the Rock Cairn.

This little area of Northrup Park is hardly every utilized, and if you are the curious hiker, we encourage you to continue all along this creek for several miles as it winds around the perimeter of the park. Its quite a place to visit after rain storms, and a wonderful out of the way picturesque location to take younger, inexperienced hikers!

Hike length: 0.5 miles
