This box is located within the Las Cienegas National Conservation Area (http://www.blm.gov/az/st/en/prog/blm_special_areas/ncarea/lascienegas.html), approximately 45 miles SE of Tucson. Pack a picnic and take time to explore this area while looking for the box. Water and brand new restrooms are available at the Empire Ranch Headquarters which is also worth a look around.
Driving Directions
From I-10, Exit 281 drive south on AZ 83 the entrance, on the east side of the road, to Las Cienegas National Conservation Area, between mileposts 40 and 39. The roads within this area are dirt, graded and 2 WD. Drive just under 3 miles on Road 6900 to the stop sign, a short distance past the turn-off to the Empire Ranch Headquarters. Turn left at the stop sign, following the brown sign towards Oak Tree Canyon onto Road 6901. Drive for 0.6 miles to a pull out on the left. You will see the sad stumps of several large cottonwoods that succumbed to the wildfire that swept through the area recently.
To the box:
Locate the Empire Gulch Bird Life sign. Notice the fence line running to the left directly in front of you as you start down the trail. Keeping the fence to your left, locate the third metal fence post (green with white top) ignoring the wooden posts in between. At the third metal fence post, there is a multi-trunk tree. The box is between the tree and the fence line hidden under some rocks.
Notice: Other boxes (mine and other planters) are in the area. Please make sure to check for them before you leave the area…
Please double bag and make sure to leave the box as you found it. Also, this is Arizona. Nothing in the wild out here is cuddly. Things will bite, stink, sting and poke you. Be aware and poke around with your hiking stick before reaching for the box!
