Mt Mitchell, at 6,684 feet, is not only the highest point in North Carolina, but the highest point east of the Mississippi and was inspiration for one of the nation’s first state parks. From its easily accessible observation deck, the spruce-fir forest of Mt Mitchell SP leads the eye to unmatched views and this letterbox.

Directions:
From Blue Ridge Pkwy go north on Hwy 128 into Mt Mitchell SP and continue to end and parking for gift shop and Observation Tower Trail in Mt Mitchell SP.

Clues:
Walk on trail to observation tower and go left of Mitchell grave and under ramp leading to top of tower to back side. Find a path leading into the woods and go on it 10 steps then left off trail 5 steps to double-trunk tree growing on top of a boulder. LB is under back side of boulder under rocks & needles.

Hike length: 0.1 miles
