Bibb Augustus Falk was born in Austin, Texas on January 27, 1899 and he learned the game of baseball by living close to Riverside Park, the home field of the Austin Senators of the Texas League. He honed his baseball talents at the Stephen F. Austin High School then enrolled at the University of Texas under the tutelage of Coach Billy Disch. In summer 1919 Falk signed his first professional baseball contract with the Chicago White Sox, and the World Series “Black Sox Scandal” opened the door to Falk’s career in the major leagues. Because many on the team were kicked out of baseball he got his chance to play in 1920 and became known as “The Man That Replaced Shoeless Joe Jackson”. Falk was a consistent hitter, ending his career after twelve seasons with a .314 career batting average, and he was also known as a heady player whose merciless riding of opponents earned him the nickname "Jockey". After Major League coaching stints with the Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox, Falk bid a permanent farewell to the majors in 1940 after his long-time friend and mentor, Billy Disch, became ill and requested Bibb’s assistance. Falk and Disch worked together at Texas, Disch working as an assistant to Bibb, who assumed the role of head baseball coach. He coached the team from 1940 to 1942, then again from 1946 to 1967, winning consecutive College World Series titles in 1949 and 1950. In 1975, the new Disch-Falk Field at UT was named in honor of Falk and his former coach, Billy Disch. Falk died in 1989 and is buried at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery, where this box can be found.
