(An urban walk. Parking will be easier on weekends, evenings, and during summer. Approximately 1.6 miles roundtrip)

Somewhere within the Commonwealth of Virginia there is a town where a certain mythological creature keeps appearing: on flags, on signs, on street corners…

Start at the building founded in 1911 and named for a famous Virginian scientist who mapped the oceans. As you face the main entrance to the building, turn left and start walking down Laverne’s pal’s street.

You’ll cross a street that looks like trash, only not quite. There you’ll see not-so-ancient reminders of those who have come before you.

You’ll pass a long garden with no flowers.

Take a right when you meet Manteo and then take a left onto the street named for the man who became the Royal Lieutenant governor of Virginia in 1710.

You’ll pass a school named for the founder of a prominent Virginia college. The school’s mascot is a clipper sailing ship and the building is on the National Register of Historic places.

Our friend the scientist will help you figure out how long to keep going in this direction, just use the title of his famous publication to decipher the street: 9 14 11 11 27 20

When you get to this street, cross from the corner of “royalty” over to the side with the place that could help you plan your dream getaway. Then turn 240 degrees and continue down the avenue. There’s food aplenty in this area, so stop in and have a bite if your journey has made you famished or parched. Or, you can always stop by during your return trip.

You’ll pass a skinny place to see actors.

Need some java to help you stay focused? There are two places ahead, familiar off to the left, but local flavor off to the right.

Before you turn right onto a royal street, you’ll see the Mississippi state flower off to your left

Go one block until you reach a busy street named for another Virginia city. While you wait for the light to change, notice the empty lot across the street. Doesn’t it seem odd that such valuable real estate would just sit empty?

When you reach the other side, investigate the little hill and you will find out about a key period in this city’s history and why the space is not developed.

All this walking, dining, and shopping has made you tired. Why don’t you sit down at the bench anchored by two trees? If you look behind you, you will see another large southern tree. If you investigate in the ivy at the base of the tree, maybe you’ll find that elusive creature and something to remember this fun city by. Be discreet as this is not a remote location!

Hope you enjoyed your walk. This is my first box planted, so I’d appreciate any feedback or updates. Thanks!

Please note: This is an urban area. Use caution when crossing streets and be sure to use stoplights or crosswalks where possible.
