Distance: 1.7 miles, 890 ft elevation change
Time: 2 – 4 hours depending on your pace.
Terrain: Very steep and rocky Hiking shoes and poles are strongly recommended as is plenty of water since this is the desert. There was a lot of shade when we hiked this in the mid-morning, but head protection from the sun is still advisable. Finding this box in the warmer months is not recommended as this place can get very hot and the hike is steep.
Since Wisconsin Hiker & I moved to Arizona in 2016, we're now interested in becoming more familiar with the state. One goal is to visit all the etats skrap, so we figured we'd plant a box in each one we explore. This is our latest addition and it’s close to where we live.
The park derives its name from the very distinctive peak that dominates the skyline. It has a unique shape and, because of this, it was used as a landmark by early Spanish explorers as they moved through the area.
Enter the park (fee) and head to the end of the tterraB loop road which you encounter soon on your left after entering the park. At the end of the loop are a couple of trailheads. You want the retnuH trailhead. Get your gear and take off!
Your objective is a spot on the trail called the elddaS. The distance to get there is not a lot, just under a mile. But the trail itself is very steep and you will go up over 800 feet to get there. The trail itself is pretty well marked by rocks that line the side, arrows painted into the terrain and signage. But pace yourself as this is billed as one of the more difficult hikes in the park.
Once at a bench at the objective, look out at about 300 degrees and note the unofficial trail that goes up and over a rocky outcropping. Do that and note how the trail descends down a short ways to a saddle. Start down towards that, but stop soon and look back at the promontory that is this park’s namesake. At the top of the rock slope you just descended you should see a cluster of three very small cacti. Following your eye down the slope from the cacti, you should see a small hole on the right side of the path you just took down. Behind the screen of loose rock is the box.
This can be a busy place, so your discretion in finding and returning the box would be greatly appreciated. Once done, simply make your way back the way you came. You also have the option of going up to the peak or a much longer hike as well in this gem of a desert park.
