Monte Sano State Park is located, near Huntsville, in northeast Alabama. In Spanish, Monte Sano means “Mountain of Health.” In the late 1800s, visitors from across the United States came for “the season” to experience and enjoy Monte Sano’s fresh air, spectacular views and mineral springs.
Today in the park they have many activities that bring people to the park. Hiking and Biking trails, Camping and Cabins, History and fun new activities abound. On your visit to the park you will need to pay an entrance fee and you may want to stop by the camp store and pick up a map and keep your car parked here or head to the trail head parking lot.
From the camp store you can head on out to the Japanese Tea House. Once you make it to the Tea House stand at the opening facing the sand garden, North, you are looking for a pair of benches off to the right. Go to them and take a seat for a moment. At the left end of the bench, as you sit there, is a tree with a log at its base. Look behind the log at the base of the tree. (Grasshopper)
Before you leave the Japanese Tea House you may want to take a look around the stage (platform), maybe around the back of the wall on stage left. Sit down on the stage left, up stage, the back corner, of the stage but bee careful for the bee under you. (Beehive)
Now take the trail that goes North from the Tea House area, it goes out to the Fire Tower Trail, you will come to a four way intersection for Tee 14 & Tee 16. Keep going and you will come to a Y in the trail, keep left, still heading to the Fire Tower Trail. You are looking for a V tree that is right next to the trail and has a little extra sticking out at you. Look on the back side at the base of this tree. (Stinkbug)
As you get to the Fire Tower Trail go left and go a short way to a side trail off to the left you are looking for some wood structures with screening, about 13 steps from the trail, go to them and turn left and look for a small multi trunk tree/bush and look at its base. (Pheasant)
Now turn around and go back down the Fire Tower Trail, East, past the Bamboo forest. As you come to the end of the Bamboo forest you will see a trail heading over to the camp ground. You are looking for two hunks of cement, one with a pipe and one with wood stuck in it. That is where the squirrel may be hiding. (Squirrel)
On down the FTT following the red blazes. Stop at the tee for the 15th hole. Now walk past the short bench or is that a bridge, anyway you are looking on the back side of the next big tree on the left. Check under rock.(Coyote)
Now on down the FTT till you can first see the Arch over the trail that goes to the Japanese Tea House. You should be standing near a red blaze with a good size snag between you and the arch. Look to your left for a three sister tree, about ten steps off the trail. Look at the base on the back side. (Grouse)
Keep following the Fire Tower Trail along with the Boy Scout section with red blazes. As you walk the trail you will see the ranks of the Boy Scout program. First comes Scout, then comes Tenderfoot. Stop and look at the base of this post for our tenderfoot friend. (Snail)
Now breeze on through Second and First Class to the rank of Star Scout. Look behind the tree that is behind the Star marker. (Goose)
Let's keep going down the Fire Tower Trail and you will cross the main road and go back into the woods for a short distance. As the trail comes to an open area, below the power lines, Stand near the Disc Golf Crossing marker, and take a bearing of 15 degrees to a very interesting looking tree. Next to the trunk of this tree is a log that is split near the end next to the tree. Be sure to re-hide well. (Elk)
On down the Fire Tower Trail Red Blazes to the intersection of the North Plateau Trail Blue Blazes and you will take a left than count four blue blazes to a five trunk tree on the right side of the trail. Look at the base of the tree with the fourth blaze and log in. Now back to the parking lot. (White Tail)
