Monte Sano State Park is located, near Huntsville, in northeast Alabama. In Spanish, Monte Sano means “Mountain of Health.” In the late 1800s, visitors from across the United States came for “the season” to experience and enjoy Monte Sano’s fresh air, spectacular views and mineral springs.
Today in the park they have many activities that bring people to the park. Hiking and Biking trails, Camping and Cabins, History and fun new activities abound. On your visit to the park you will need to pay an entrance fee and you may want to stop by the camp store and pick up a map before you head to the trail head parking lot.

Start from the Trail head parking lot and head out on the North Plateau Trail. Follow the blue blazes past the YACC picnic pavilion. Pass under some power lines and cross over a paved road and onto the parking for the overlook. Keep following the blue blazes, after you leave the overlook parking, on the NPT it will take a right turn at a three way intersection. Take the side trail, forward, for 12 paces, turn right go three paces to the base of a tree. The building you see in the clearing is the Wernher Von Braun Planetarium and they have some telescopes out and about some times. Now back to the main trail and keep following the NPT. (Look Out)

On down the NPT and as you go you will see a paved road off to your right. You will pass a short connector trail to the road. Go three more blue blazes to the next side trail to the left. Go a short way up the side trial to the base of the second tree on the left. (Space Man)

On down the NPT you will still be able to see the road on the right, you will pass an alligator tree on your right. Shortly after that tree will be another side trail that goes up to a parking lot next to the WVBP. Go up the side trail look to your right at the base of a tree. (Space Shuttle)

On down the NPT you will go down hill to a big wash and back up hill. As you start up hill, on the left is the second big tree with roots across the trail. On the back side of this tree under some rocks. (Space Walk)

On down the NPT to a group of three large flat rocks on the left side of the trail and one good sized flat rock in the trail. Stand in the main trail on the launch pad. Look to the uphill side of the ledge (3 flat rocks) for a small pile of rocks (SPOR). (Rocket Ship)

Now on down the NPT to the next marked trail intersection, with the Cold Springs Trail, and go two more trail blazes and look on the left side of the trail for a large tree with a moss footed tree behind it. Look around the moss foot for this one. (Yoda)

Now on down the NPT for three more trail blazes. At the third blaze the trail has a support wall that runs along the right (down hill) side of the trail. Near the base of the tree with the blaze on it and behind a couple of rocks. (Chewbacca)

Now on down the NPT for three more trail blazes, to another side trail going off to the left. Take this side trail for five paces and look to your left for a tree that has broken off at about 12 feet up. Look near the base of this broken tree. (Admiral Ackbar)

Now on down the NPT for ten more trail blazes, to another side trail going off to the left. Look back across the main trail from the side trail to the V tree that is about six paces from main the trail. (Land Walker)

Now on down the NPT to the intersection of the Fire Tower Trail (just before the main road). Now turn left and follow The Fire Tower trail, Red Blazes, for more boxes. As you come to the train tracks go to the far end of the rails and look on down the FTT to the second red blaze on the right. Look at the base of a small tree just past the tree with the red blaze on it. (Darth Vader)

Now on down the FTT for three more red trail blazes. Look for a social trail to the left and go up it seven paces and look to your left for a small tree. Look about one foot off the ground and twist open the Death Star and log in. (Death Star) (Log Book for this group)

If you keep following the Fire Tower Trail you will come to Tail intersection with the trail that goes from the Camp Store to the Japanese Tea House and you have some options from there. (Back to your car or keep looking for more things to see)

Hike length: 1-2 miles
