Monte Sano State Park is located, near Huntsville, in northeast Alabama. In Spanish, Monte Sano means “Mountain of Health.” In the late 1800s, visitors from across the United States came for “the season” to experience and enjoy Monte Sano’s fresh air, spectacular views and mineral springs.
Today in the park they have many activities that bring people to the park. Hiking and Biking trails, Camping and Cabins, History and fun new activities abound. On your visit to the park you will need to pay an entrance fee and you may want to stop by the camp store and pick up a map before you head to the trail head parking lot.

From the Trail head parking lot head South along the South Plateau Trail to the split and go to the right. Cross over the intersection of the Fire Tower Trail and keep going past the third bridge. Now go on past the next shelter on the left side of the trail. After passing the 1 mile marker you will Go on down the SPT to the Fire Tower Trail sign and go left on up the Fire Tower trail 15 paces. Look left and go 10 paces into the woods to a downed tree. By the root ball, not down the animal hole but on the back side of the roots with a rock. (Red Fire Works)(HT27)

Back to the trail sign and keep going on the SPT to the next trail intersection and trail sign for the Fire Tower Trail and for 15 paces on down the Fire Tower trail and look left to a stump that is a short ways into the woods. Part way up the stump. (Happy 4th of July)(HT26)

Now back to the intersection of the SPT & Fire Tower Trail. From the trail sign go 15 paces down the South Plateau Trail. Look left for a near by stump in the woods. Box is in the top section of the stump. (Green Fire Works)(HT25)

You can go back to your car or keep going.

Hike length: 2-3 miles
