The Northern Cardinal is the state bird of Kentucky. However, it is also numerous in Arizona. I prefer to believe they come to Arizona to “camp” in our marvelous climate!
From Tucson, take I-10 east to Exit 281 (State Highway 83 to Sonoita). Travel south on Highway 83 for about 21 miles to the Gardner Canyon Road. Turn right (west) on Gardner Canyon Road and continue a quarter mile to Forest Service Road 163 (Fish Canyon Road). Turn right on Road 163 and continue for about 5 miles (following the signs to Kentucky Camp) to the junction of Road 163 and the trail that goes south down to Kentucky Camp. Park in the large established dirt parking lot at the southwest corner of this junction.
Along the south side of the parking lot is a corner in the fence line with 3 wooden corner fence posts. Walk south along the fence line and count 14 metal fence posts. At the 14th metal post there is an Oak Tree to the right. The box is under the northwest side of the tree under a flat rock nestled up against a small Juniper and some Bear Grass
Please be sure the contents are double ziplocked when you put them back in the box (i.e. the stamp is in a ziploc, the book is in a ziploc, and the two are in the larger ziploc bag). Please put the lid on tight. Please rehide the box well under the flat rock and covered with twigs and other plant debris so that it can not be seen from any direction.
Contact me if the box needs attention:
