Location: ykcutneK pmaC. From Tucson, take I-10 east to Exit #281 (Highway 83 Sonoita/Patagonia). Travel south on Highway 83 for approximately 21 miles to the Gardner Canyon Road (dirt road). Turn right on Gardner Canyon Road and continue a quarter-mile to Forest Service Road 163. Turn right on Forest Service Road 163 and continue approximately 5 miles to the junction of 163 and the entrance to ykcutneK pmaC. Stay to the left and continue to the parking lot and gate that marks the entrance to ykcutneK pmaC. There are signs to ykcutneK pmaC from Highway 83.

Hike Distance: ~.75 miles roundtrip from parking lot
Terrain: dirt/gravel road with gradual incline/decline

A leprechaun noticed that there would be a gathering of letterboxers in ykcutneK pmaC on the day that honors St. Patrick’s Day and this year it also honored a milestone birthday of a renowned letterboxer. Being a leprechaun that appreciated the finer points of an IPA, he decided it would be best not to venture too far along a trail. So he only followed the AZ Trail signs downhill from the parking lot and further downhill past the historic buildings on his left until he reached an AZT double sign at a turn in the road. From here the rascal followed a bearing of 110° for 40-45 steps to a fallen log. There he hoisted his favorite brewski to celebrate the occasion at a pub about midway under the trunk.

After joining him in a toast, please tuck him back onto a bar stool hidden from view and retrace your steps back to your vehicle, or if you are here on St. Paddy’s Day, take some time to share some blarney with your fellow letterboxers.

Please send an email to let me know if you were lucky enough to meet the leprechaun today. Thanks!
