Hand carved stamp. Easy stroll U.S. Forest Service Park

Pena Blanca Lake is a very popular fishing and picnic area. We have visited mostly on week days when it is quiet and restful. It has many areas for picnics and viewing the lake, which covers 45 acres, fishing, or boating. The boat ramp is at the uppermost parking lot. The lake is actually a reservoir established in 1957. It was closed for dredging in 2008 and re-opened in 2009. Check web site for history and rules & regulations.
From I-19 take exit 12 and follow the signs to the lake. About 11 miles. Look for the Upper Thumb Picnic area and go to the far end of the parking lot and take the stone steps down. At the bottom of the stairs go left to the horseshoe pits. Down again to pair of tables. Sit at the table on your left and look toward the lake. At about 10 feet and a little to the right is a multi-trunked tree. The box behind and covered by weeds and a SPOR. Congratulations, you have found the only Elk in Pena Blanca.
If you feel adventurous, you can take a rough back road to Ar.ivaca. Look on a mountain road map for Forest Service road numbers.
