This short hike allows you to see an ancient Hawaiian cave, a piece of movie history, a hidden beach and a rescued species without taking all day.

Take Poipu road past the Grand Hyatt. The road turns to dirt along the golf course, continue for approximately 2 miles until you get to a fork in the road. Take the road on the right. You’ll continue along fencing and see a horse stable. To the right of CJM stables, the road ends at Gillians beach. Park on the right side by the fence and you will see a sign for Makauwahi Cave Trail on your left. Take the short winding trail and you will see beautiful vistas on your way to the cave. There will be signposts marked 1-14 to follow. There will be a spot to look down into the cave area as you are walking. You will cross a small wooden bridge and the cave entrance is ahead on the right. Be sure you are there Wed - Sun 10 am to 2 pm so the entrance to the cave will be open. The opening into the cave is very small but it is open to the sky once you get inside. It is a very fascinating piece of ancient Hawaii. Once you have toured the cave, go back out and back across the bridge. (The story is that the bridge was built for a Pirates of the Caribbean movie). Past the bridge you will see a barbed wire area - use the steps to climb over and visit the tortoises. This area is a refuge for abandoned tortoises. They are very friendly and will come over to you. When you are done visiting them, head back over to the bridge to find the letterbox. It is hidden in a crevice in the boulders on the left side of the bridge. There is a picnic table nearby. After re-hiding the box continue back to Gillians beach to enjoy the view - just be aware the stream leading into the beach area can be quite polluted.
