On March 30, 1867, the United States purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire for the sum of $7.2 million, but it was not until October 18 of that year that the commissioners arrived in Sitka and the formal flag-raising took place at Fort Sitka, now called Baranof Castle SHS. Alaska's territorial legislature declared Alaska Day a holiday in 1917 and the Alaska Day Festival in Sitka annually commemorates the transfer and celebrates the diversity of cultures within Alaska. You can visit the site where it all happened while finding this box.

Directions:
Get to Sitka, probably by cruise ship.

Clues:
Walk west from Harbor Dr on Harbor Rd to Baranof Castle SHS entrance on right just before Lincoln St. Go to top and admire the view and read the information signs, then walk down the ramp to first exit on right. Go on gravel path 5 steps and look behind second rock in wall on left under a rose bush. LB is under a stone at back right side.

Hike length: 0.1 miles
