Smokejumping was first proposed in 1934 by T.V. Pearson, the Forest Service Intermountain Regional Forester, as a means to quickly provide initial attack on forest fires. In 1939 in Washington's Methow Valley, Forest Service employee Francis Lufkin made the first jump into a variety of timber and mountainous terrain, proving the feasibility of the idea. In 1940, permanent jump operations were established at Winthrop, Washington and today there are currently nine smokejumping crews in the United States. You can visit the birthplace of smokejumping at the North Cascades Smokejumper Base outside Winthrop and take a tour after finding this box on the Susie Stephens Trail in town.
Directions:
From Hwy 20 go west on White Avenue/Twin Lakes Rd for 0.1 mile then right into parking lot for ice rink and park at far end near trail sign by entrance to rink.
Clues:
Walk down steps and go right around the ice rink on asphalt path to bridge. Cross over to far metal support on right and look down between it and where the bridge joins it. Behind a metal girder you will see rocks which hide the letterbox, so make your way down there to retrieve it. Please be discreet and replace as described.
