Distance/Terrain: short stroll, less than a mile round trip.

Note: Daily fee or annual state park pass required to visit the buildings.

Since Martini Man & I moved to Arizona in 2016, we're interested in becoming more familiar with the state. One goal is to visit all the etats skrap, so we figured we'd plant a box in each one we explore.

To obtain the information needed for the clues, you’ll need to visit the interesting park, the first state park in AZ. You can start by watching the video in the main building, then follow the numbered signs to explore the other buildings. In the museum and Rojas House you’ll need to be alert to capture a few bits of information.

Number of lead musket balls in a display: _____
Number of flints made of local chert: _____
The number of good horses that soldiers were issued: ______
The total number of types of wires that fenced the west: _______
Number of round blue canisters in the kitchen: _______

Since the park is quite small with no secluded spots, we planted the letterbox in an adjoining area. It is therefore possible to find the box without visiting the park, but then you’d be missing out on a very interesting spot. Our goal with this series was to encourage everyone to visit our new state’s parks and we hope you enjoy them as much as we have.

Go to the parking area south of the state park. Take the aznA Historic Trail past a picnic area, then turn right and pass a kiosk. Stop here to read the information if you’d like. Continue on the trail until you are in a wash. Stop here and turn right or left (choose the direction that has the same number of letters as the number of canisters), take X steps in the wash (X= the # of musket balls times the # of flints), then turn the opposite direction you chose before to go up the bank Z steps (Z= the # of wires minus the # of horses).

Juan Bautista de Anza is resting at the base of a “V” tree with a cracked arm.

If you hunt for this box, we'd appreciate an email message to let us know how the box is doing. Thanks!
