Location: kraP etatS anilataC
Distance: 0.3 mile, little elevation change
Time: 20 minutes
Terrain: Sandy trail used by horses and some cross-country desert walking.
NOTE: You may also want to look for "Bronco Rider" by Dawgdok when you are in the area.

Note: Before you hit the trail, please be sure you have plenty of water with you because it can get hot on the open trails. Wearing a hat and sunscreen will protect you from the desert sun. Hiking poles will be helpful in some spots. You may encounter horses on the trails. Please step aside to give them right of way. Although we never saw any, you should be alert for snakes and scorpions. Also be careful of the cactus – we can verify that they do tend to “attack” the unwary! Please remember to seal all baggies and boxes well. You may be the last person to find the box for quite a while, so do your best to protect all the contents from wet weather. Also be sure to rehide well to avoid accidental discovery by noxers.

Enter the park (fee) and head to the equestrian center and park on the left along the fence in the designated area for vehicles without trailers. Restrooms are available at this location. Once parked, go to the southwest corner locating a dirt road with a no parking sign demarking its start.

Head west/northwest on the road curving around a hill. Pass by a wash area on the left. The path will eventually merge into the wash, but stop at the merger point. Take 25 steps back the way you came and climb up about 15 steps on a faint trail to the left. From here you should see a barrel cactus uphill at 30°. Walk towards it, but notice a smaller barrel and palo verde well below it which should be your real target. From there walk forward 30 steps until you reach a concave rock flanked by prickly pear cacti. Walk another 18 steps forward between two palo verdes and then take a bearing of 290°. Catalina Roundup is located in the center of a grouping of five large rocks.

Go back to the main trail and head back to the equestrian center.

Hike length: 0.5 miles
