Location: kraP etatS anilataC
Distance: ~3 miles, ~300 ft elevation change
Time: 2 – 2.5 hours depending on your pace.
Terrain: Mostly sandy trail. Some elevation gain, although brief.
NOTE: You may want to look for other boxes along the way including Classic Cowboy, Confident Cowgirl, Flirty Fun, Sexy Stud, Louis L’Amour and Westworld.

Note: Before you hit the trail, please be sure you have plenty of water with you because it can get hot on the open trails. Wearing a hat and sunscreen will protect you from the desert sun. Hiking poles will be helpful in some spots. You may encounter horses on the trails. Please step aside to give them right of way. Although we never saw any, you should be alert for snakes and scorpions. Also be careful of the cactus – we can verify that they do tend to “attack” the unwary! Please remember to seal all baggies and boxes well. You may be the last person to find the box for quite a while, so do your best to protect all the contents from wet weather. Also be sure to rehide well to avoid accidental discovery by noxers.

Enter the park (fee) and head to the trailhead parking area located at the end of the park road. Once parked, cross the park road to the kiosk on the other side. From here head to the Romero Canyon Trial, crossing the Sutherland Wash. The trail curves up a steep hill to start you on the Canyon Loop. It’s a bit of a slog up, but you are now done with the hardest part.

Continue on the Canyon Loop trail, passing the turnoff for the Romero Canyon trail to the right. Don’t take it, but stay on the left to remain on the Canyon Loop. Continue on the Loop quite a ways until you reach several signposts on the right. Pass the trail signs and continue walking on the Canyon Loop. Take a break at the benches, then continue down the stairs. Enjoy your walk along the wash. This spot is narrow and busy so no place for a letterbox (but a good spot to enjoy seasonal water and more chit-chat)! Cross a wash and pass the Sutherland Trail on your right. Continue on, crossing another section of the wash. Just before some more stairs take a trail on the right. Proceed 63 steps to see a very large saguaro on the left. Look through the middle of a mesquite to see some rock piles. Kokopelli Trio is under a large rock with yellow-gold lichen.

Return to the Canyon Loop and ascend the stairs. Proceed on to some brown signposts. Take the “Undesignated Trail” towards the hill. At a fork, take a fainter trail on the left for 28 steps. Then take another 16 steps at 240°. Flute Flint is inside deadwood between a mesquite and Christmas cholla.

Return once more to the Canyon Loop. Just before the next brown sign take a small trail on the right. Stop walking on this trail when you reach a small sandy wash. Look over your right shoulder to spot a rock under hanging mistletoe. Desert Serenade is behind it on the left side.

Return to the Canyon Loop and finish your walk back to the parking lot.

Hike length: 2-3 miles
