Directions to Hathaway Pond in Barnstable, MA:

Take Rt 6 to exit 6 (Rt 132 South). Go left at the first set of lights onto Phinney's Lane. About a half mile down on the left is the entrance to Hathaway Pond. There is a parking fee in the summer. This 20 acre kettle pond is 57 feet deep in the center and is stocked with trout. Trails run completely around the pond and are frequented by dog walkers. Clues to the letterbox are of medium difficulty.

This is a tale of two trout, David and Tanya, who found each other late last spring in the deep cool waters of Hathaway Pond. They were inseparable throughout the long days of summer as they chased one another along the many underwater trails or rested in the cool shade of the trees. They even found the perfect home in the crevice of two large boulders deep on the far side of the pond. The crisp days of fall brought many ambitious anglers to the shores of Hathaway pond, but David and Tanya managed to avoid the flashy and tempting lures presented to them. And now, after a long winter of bitter cold winds and thick ice, the two trout were ready to venture out from their deep crevice home into the warm days of spring.

One sunny afternoon David and Tanya swam into the shallow waters of the beach to watch the antics of the many dogs who came to walk the quiet trails around Hathaway pond. There were two anglers in a canoe that day who seemed intent on fishing the spot on the pond where the trout's boulder home lay, so David and Tanya had agreed on taking a swim to the beach to avoid them.

Suddenly, a terrifying roar reverberated through the water as a nearby motor enthusiast gunned his remote-control boat across the pond. Tanya disappeared in a flash, but David who was momentarily disoriented by the sound, swam in the wrong direction and lost sight of Tanya. He panicked when he realized that he did not know where she went and frantically swam around in circles trying to guess which trail she took. He was even more frightened because the canoeists were now paddling in his direction.

With no time to lose, David darted down the main trail to the west, hoping that it was the trail that Tanya took. At the first fork in the trail he turned right, knowing that Tanya favored that route in their strolls. He swam quickly, not daring to look back to see how close the canoe was. At the next fork David turned left up an incline, just to get away from the rapidly increasing sound of the remote-control boat, and then he went left again.

There was still no sight of Tanya when he came to the rock with the strange orange lines on it. He boldly decided to turn right towards the canoe, just to make sure that the anglers weren't threatening Tanya. David held his breath as he silently approached the canoe, but he still saw no sign of his friend. He turned away, praying that she hadn't been caught.

David swallowed the lump in his throat and continued on, hoping to find Tanya safe in their boulder home. He turned left at the next fork and then kept going straight until he came to the little line and circle. He slowed down to turn right and then emerged into a clearing with a shiny tin lure stuck high on a twin branch. David's heart was beating wildly as he headed down the path toward the sun. He could now see the two large boulders on the left that marked their home. Into the crevice he swam and there was Tanya waiting for him! The two trout shed tears of joy and hugged each other over and over again, happy to be together at last. They knew right then and there that they wanted to get married so they set a date for May 23.

And as for the two anglers in the canoe, they paddled back to the beach with a good idea for a letterbox. Most undoubtedly they will be back again for more trout fishing. Probably the weekend of David and Tanya's wedding.
