Distance/Terrain: level walk on sandy/dirt trail, ~1.5 - 2 miles round trip.

Note: Daily fee or annual state park pass required to visit park.

Since Martini Man & I moved to Arizona in 2016, we're interested in becoming more familiar with the state. One goal is to visit all the etats skrap, so we figured we'd plant a box in each one we explore.

This is a very interesting historical park that includes a video presentation and colorful exhibits about those who once "involuntarily" stayed there and the prison life they had to endure. A total of 3,069 prisoners, including 29 women, lived within the walls during the prison's 33 years of operation. Original prison artifacts bring to life information about the prison history, prison staff and convicts. If you are visiting the area, I recommend this as one of your stops.

Unfortunately the grounds are well secured and monitored and I didn’t want anyone to join the ranks of prisoners due to any suspicious activities, so the box is not hidden within the prison walls. So after exploring the site, park in the lower parking lot and start your march north, passing by a yellow gate.

To avoid a prison sentence, please note the signs admonishing you about all the things you should NOT do: NO hunting! NO unauthorized vehicles! NO alcohol! NO OHVs! NO 4x4s! Continue towards the more welcoming admitting kiosk and then head southeast. Stop along the way to learn about some other unfortunate folks that lived in this area in years gone by. Immediately after that, diverge to your left onto a dirt path.

As you tour this area you’ll always keep the Colorado River on your left, preventing your escape. However you will pass some benches and a scenic overlook if you want to rest along your journey. Ignore all paths to your right and continue on until you reach a “cell” confining some pumping equipment on your left. From the SW corner of the cell, take 18 steps south, then 7 steps east. The contraband you seek is hidden beneath some logs which are tucked beneath some low hanging branches on your left.

Replace the box well and retrace your steps to return, or continue on for a longer loop hike.

If you hunt for this box, we'd appreciate an email message to let us know how the box is doing. Thanks!

Hike length: 1-2 miles
