Lt. Col. Ernest Childers is Broken Arrow’s most famous war hero. He was given the Medal of Honor for his courageous acts in WWII during a battle near Oliveto, Italy, on September 22, 1943. He was the first Native American from Oklahoma to be honored.
Childers was born to Muscogee-Creek parents near Broken Arrow in 1918. His Native name is Red Eagle. He attended grade school in Broken Arrow and went on to graduate from Chilocco Indian School.
After graduation, he joined the National Guard and was deployed as part of the Thunderbirds of the 45th Infantry Division. Despite an injury, Childers aggressively led his men and turned the tide of the battle near Oliveto.

Clues:
Find your way to the Broken Arrow Historical Society Museum on Main Street. Once upstairs, you can find many exhibits associated with Childers: Muscogee-Creek exhibit, the Childers’ cabin and a Tribute to Veterans. Find the display that details the battle near Oliveto. You’ll want to look for a large bronze cabinet. In the middle drawer is a satchel with what you seek. Be stealthy.
Placed with permission from the Broken Arrow Historical Society.
