Pond Meadow Park is a beautiful park maintained by the towns of Braintree and Weymouth. The park can be accessed by entrances and parking areas in each town. For this hunt you will begin on the Braintree side of the park. The Braintree entrance is at 470 Liberty St, Braintree, MA near the intersection of Middle Street and Liberty Street.

This is a very easy hike that is intended to give the newcomer to Pond Meadow a good look around the park. Be sure to bring some food for the ducks and swans you will see along the way. Packing a lunch is worth your while too as there is a nice picnic area.

Clues:

Upon entering the park from Liberty Street, follow Carl Johnson access road past the DONATION BOX (hint!!) downhill to the first small parking area on your left. This will be your starting point.

Climb out of the parking area in a northerly direction up a path located to the right of a large stone outcrop. You will come to a paved walk/bike path. Follow this winding path in an easterly direction until you reach the dam at the north side of the pond.

This area has a great view and is the perfect spot to feed the ducks and swans. There is also a picnic area nearby if you need to feed yourself! In your quest for the crab you want to cross the dam and pick-up the paved walk/bike path again heading in a southerly direction. Proceed south until you find the outdoor chapel area which is tucked off the path to your right overlooking the pond.

Exit the seating area of the chapel on a heading of 180 degrees and follow this not-so-well defined path to a wooden dock that juts into the pond. This is typically another great place for viewing and feeding the ducks and swans. After having your fill of this scenic view, leave the dock and continue to the top of a well defined path to a clearing and turn southeast onto the Yellow trail. Follow this yellow trail until you intersect with the Red trail. Head west on the red trail over a small log bridge. Where the red trail forks, you go toward the pond and over another wooded bridge.

You will pickup the paved walk/bike path again and follow it east until it forks. Take the right fork and follow toward the Weymouth side of the park. Turn North onto the Ranger Trail.

Once on the Ranger Trail you will continue in a northerly direction over 2 wooden bridges. When you come to a stone wall crossing the trail, you will sight uphill looking for a tall squared stone bound marker. The Pond Meadow Crab is hidden at the base of the marker.

Please be sure to hide it well when done.

Return: Continue north on the Ranger Trail, onto the paved walk/bike path. This will take you back past the dam and eventually back to the parking lot where you started.

If you can, please leave a little something in one of the yellow donation boxes. There is one at the top of the access road where you entered on the Braintree side of the park. Try stamping a buck or two with the Pond Meadow Crab prior to dropping in the box.

Thanks...We hope you had fun...BJ&D
